Transpersonal Approach in Holotropic Conscious Status - Focusing on ¡°Transpersonal Breathwork¡±

Abstract

|
Nowadays, the world is experiencing anxiety about life and uncertainty of the future due to COVID-19 situation; therefore, the approach that can heal and overcome the present, and be able to see the new vision in future is needed at this point. One of the major models of transpersonal psychology is Stanislav Grof¡¯s Transpersonal Breathwork. Transpersonal Breathwork is the approach that enables self-discovery, healing, and transpersonal experience in holotropic conscious status. Stanislav Grof¡¯s Transpersonal Breathwork suggests an approach for those kinds of healing and growth. Transpersonal Breathwork can provide a new perspective on the pain and crisis of life as a place of self-transcendent experience, overcome the fear of death to find the meaning of life, and further provide spiritual growth and healing. Therefore, at first, this research examined the history of transpersonal psychology which has a theoretical background in Transpersonal Breathwork, suggested by Stanislav Grof. Subsequently, it explained major stream and basic concept of Transpersonal Breathwork; definition of hylotropic and holotropic, the four stages of the basic perinatal period model, experience about death and resurrection in holotropic conscious status, the way session proceed (breather, sitter, facilitator). Moreover, it reviewed the major overseas studies. At the conclusion, the research discussed current domestic status and future tasks of Transpersonal Breathwork.
